Parent Infant

Once a week hour-long individual sessions with an early-intervention specialist. Children range from newborn up to 2 years of age. Parents are taught how to stimulate their child's language development in the home environment. Baby & Me classes are available to families enrolled in the Parent-Infant program. Classes take place in a group setting with parents and children. The children develop early social skills as they interact with their peers.

Toddler Class

A small group class with a teacher and an assistant teacher. The Toddler class meets four days each week and is in session for 2 ½ hours. The class size is limited to six children. Children range from 18 months to 36 months of age. Parents are involved in weekly group parent classes and once a month individual sessions with the classroom teacher. The goals of this class are to stimulate auditory perception, to develop language skills, and to gain preschool skills.

Preschool Full-Day Classes

Three small group classes five full days (early dismissal on Fridays) each week with a teacher and an assistant teacher. Each class is limited to six children. Children are grouped by age from 2 1/2 to 4 years old. The goals of the preschool full-day classes are to refine auditory comprehension, to develop receptive and expressive language mastery, and to increase preschool skills including development of pre-reading and early math concepts.

Elementary Full-Day Classes

Classes held five full days (early dismissal on Fridays) each week with one teacher. Each class is limited to four children. The goals of the elementary full-day classes are to continue to refine auditory comprehension, to develop greater receptive and expressive language mastery, and to grow in academic skills including reading and math.

Learning Center

Groups of children go to the Learning Center different times during the day for various activities. Preschoolers engage in activities based on a cognitive curriculum and have opportunities for creative play and exploration. Kindergarten and elementary students are involved in a cooperative learning center and a reading center. In cooperative learning students engage in cooperative activities to achieve goals together. In the reading center students develop independent work skills and practice skills developed in the classroom.

Mainstream Program

Children gain communication skills in the Hamm Center classrooms and practice those skills in many other situations. Students are given opportunities to succeed in the mainstream through our Kenan Preschool program or at nearby elementary schools. Hamm Center teachers discuss successes and challenges with the children and help the students develop strategies for communication.

Summer Programs (not included in tuition)

Individual auditory verbal and speech therapy, group classes and tutoring are available for the Hamm Center students during a six-week summer session beginning near the end of the school year. Hamm Center students frequently enroll in the Speech School summer camp and can be taken from the mainstream camp settings for individual sessions and then be returned to camp.
