American Girl Class*
Instructor: Linda Lasker
Class Location: Art Room
Class Day & Time: Monday, 3:00-4:30 Grades K-6
Class Begins: Monday, February 27, 2012

The American Girls are coming to the Atlanta Speech School! Ms. Linda Lasker will lead this fun and educational class. Students will take a journey through history as they learn about time periods through the eyes of the American Girls Book series. Students will have opportunities to flex their creative muscles while designing clothing, bookmarks, doll pets, blankets, holiday gifts, and even matching accessories for themselves and their doll! Students will celebrate the last day of class with a special party.*American Girl doll not required…any loved doll will do! Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided until 6:00. Cost is $345.
 
 
Lego Sculpture
Instructor: Ken Cressman
Class Location: Cafeteria/ Art Room
Class Day and Time: Monday 3:00-4:30 Grades K-6
Classes Begin: Monday, February 27
Do you love to create towering buildings, vehicles, and other cool stuff with Legos? Even if you have built with these colorful blocks before, this class will give you new ideas on what to do with old Lego sets. Planned activities will help students build with success while having fun at the same time. So come to class and show your ultimate Lego building skills and creativity! This class is open to all grades and the class will be divided into age appropriate projects. This is a fantastic class for improving fine motor skills and encouraging creative thought. Supervised indoor play and outdoor play are provided after class until 4:00. Cost is $345.
 
Webkinz
Instructor: Susan Rhoades

Welcome to the wonderful world of Webkinz. Webkinz are cute fuzzy animals that come to life on the web once a secret code is entered at the Webkinz website. Atlanta Speech School’s very own Susan Rhoades will assist students in navigating the Webkinz World. Students will have a chance to play games, work with other students, take care of their animal and their home, and learn all in a supervised environment. All Students will receive a new Webkinz Animal to begin building a new world for their little critter. Webkinz is a fabulous chance for students to learn and have fun in a safe environment. So join Ms. Rhoades and her very own Webkinz in cyberspace. Students who are interested in Webkinz class should have minimal typing and mouse skills before signing up for the class. Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided until 6:00. Cost is $345.
 
Roots and Shoots
Instructor: Linda Lasker

Class Day & Time: Tuesday, 3:00-4:30 Grades K-6
Class Begins: Tuesday, February 28
Roots and Shoots is a beginning gardening class for those budding plant and nature lovers. If the thought of playing in the dirt, creating growing projects, and even eating some of those projects is appealing. This is the class! A sampling of projects is included below.
Get Growing - Experiment with different soils, lighting and watering to see what helps or hinders our plant growth.
Wiggly Worms - Create the perfect soil with compost and earthworms.
Magic Seeds - Collect seeds from the foods we eat or find outside. Watch our magic seeds grow.
Bad Hair Day - Grow and groom grass people...who needs a haircut?
Come to Your Senses - Create a Scratch and Sniff herb garden.
Potted Gifts - Fundraiser for the garden class.
Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided before and after class until 6:00. All materials are supplied in class. Cost is $345.
 
Master Spy Sleuths
Instructor: Peter Marino
Class Location: Music Room/Auditorium
Class Day and Time: Tuesday 3:00- 4:30 Grades K-6
Classes Begin: Tuesday, February 28
Are you an aspiring detective, love to solve mysteries, find clues and figure out who done it? Do you love to spy on you sister or brother or figure out if they are spying on you? Shhhh! Don’t tell anyone, unless they know the secret password, but Master Spy Sleuths is the ultimate in spy and detective classes! Learn how to gather clues from the crime scene, question witnesses and suspects, and figure out which shady Speech School employee is guilty of the most horrible crimes (theft of cookies and awful pranks). Learn how to make secret maps and codes, capture finger prints, create periscopes, “spy glasses”, and disguises students can use in sibling Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided before and after class until 6:00. All materials are supplied in class. Cost is $345.
 
Duct, Duct, Design
Instructor: Nicole Penson and Lekiesha Merritt
Class Location: Art Room
Class Day and Time: Tuesday 3:00- 4:30 Grades K-6
Classes Begin: Tuesday, February 28
The most versatile material in the world makes its debut in the Atlanta Speech School After-School Program. Students will turn Duct Tape into simple and more complex project like bookmarks and wallets while working with the crafty eyes of Ms. Nicole Penson and Ms. Lekiesha Merritt. Students will learn the basics of tearing tape, making strong seams, and building layers to make a functional piece of art. A new and exciting class that promises to change your mind about duct tape and its many uses! Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided before and after class until 6:00. All materials are supplied in class. Cost is $345.
 
CDG (Cheer, Dance, Gymnastics) Come Cheer With ME!
Instructor: Jill Johnson
Class Location: Movement Room
Class Day & Time: Wednesday, 3:00-4:30
Class Begins: Wednesday, Grades K-6
Come join the fun of Gymnastics, Dance and Cheerleading class! This specially designed class is for ages 5-11. It is a great introduction class for beginner gymnastics emphasizing: forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, bridges, splits, cartwheels. We will work on strength, flexibility and most of all build self-esteem! In addition, the Dance segment will be a fun and age appropriate introduction to pom-pom routines with a variety of music. And last but not least is the Cheerleading segment. Participants will learn cheers, chants and basic cheerleading motions for their age group! All students will get the opportunity to participate in the end of class "Cheerleading and Gymnastics Show". This is a fun show in which the students choose their favorite skills and perform for all of our parents! Each child will receive a special gymnastics/ cheerleading achievement trophy and a set of pom-poms!! Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided before and after class until 6:00. All materials are supplied in class. Cost is $345.
 
Inside Out Adventures
Instructors: Stephanie Young/Ken Cressman
Class Location: Movement Room/ Black Lobby/Playgrounds
Class Day & Time: Wednesday, 3:00-4:30
Class Begins: Wednesday, February 29 Grades: K-6
Looking for some local adventure and excitement? Love to explore, get dirty, and play? Then the new Speech School Inside Out Adventures class is for you! The Adventurers will have the opportunity to challenge their strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and self regulation skills, under the skillful care of Ms. Stephanie Young, Occupational Therapist extraordinaire. Stephanie will guide children through a variety of activities to move with a purpose, develop core strength and endurance, learn strategies to self-regulate, and have a ton of fun. Activities will include learning to ride a twowheeler, mastering new motor challenges, climbing, hiking, and exploration. Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided before and after class until 6:00. Cost is $345. Class size is limited to fifteen students.
Starting in May, students will begin bike practice at school.
 
International Paper Crafts
Instructor: Marina Zalmanova
Location: Art Room
Class Day and Time: Thursday, 3:00-4:30 Grades K-6
Class Begins: Thursday, March 1
From our resident guru in paper folding, card making, and paper crafts of all kinds, Atlanta Speech School presents Ms. Marina Zalmanova, a former Wardlaw parent, who yearly creates one of a kind holiday cards and other paper creations. With this expertise, Marina will lead students in card creation, holiday projects, paper flowers and many more easily recreated works of art. Class size is limited; please sign up quickly if interested. Supervised outdoor play and homework time are provided until 6:00. Cost is $345.
 
Drummin’ and Strummin’
Instructor: David Powell
Class Location: Multipurpose Room/Music Room
Class day and time: Thursday, 3:00-4:30 Grades K-6
Class begins: Thursday, March 1
For the first time ever….drum roll please…guitar with gusto! Our very own David Powell, guitarist, composer, and troubadour extraordinaire will be leading fun and exciting lessons with guitar in tow. Students will learn how to string and tune the guitar. The will also learn some fun and different ways to use the guitar not just as a string instrument, but as percussion instrument as well. David will also share his expertise, learned from the long touring road, in rock star posing and air guitar. This will also lead to some chances for students to practice their roving minstrel skills as they serenade the staff and anyone in earshot! Students will have chance to show off their real and air guitar skills during a final recital put on for family and friends. This class assures to provide first class guitar fun with a little craziness thrown in for good measure! Supervised outdoor play and homework time are provided until 6:00. Cost is $345.
For this class students must provide their own guitar for the duration of the class.
 
Super Shootout Soccer
Instructor: Ken Cressman
Class Location: Movement Room/ Love Auditorium/Playground
Class Day & Time: Thursday, 3:00-4:30 Grades K-6
Class Begins: Thursday, March 1
Learn the basics of soccer! Mr. Cressman, a certified soccer coach will be leading a fun Join the fun and become kings and queens of the pitch! Learn how to control the ball, dribble, pass, shoot, and he scores! GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Leave it to Mr. Cressman to make soccer fun as well as super active. Equipment for all activities is included; however students should bring their own shin-guards. Supervised homework time and outdoor play are provided before and after class until 6:00. Cost is $345.
 
Chess Club
Instructor: Kid Chess Inc. Staff
Class Location: Cafeteria/ Multipurpose Room
Class Day and Time: Friday, 1:00-2:00 Grades K-6
Classes Begin: Friday, March 2
Atlanta Speech School Chess Club begins in the fall and continues through the end of the school year. New chess players are invited to join anytime during the year. Classes meet from 1:00 to 2:00 for students in K through 6th grades who are interested in learning to play chess or improve their game. Chess coaches from Kid Chess Inc. teach the class. There is a low student-teacher ratio allowing for individual attention. The focus is on enrichment and development of all participants, regardless of playing level. Chess fosters confidence and develops sportsmanship, patience, focus, critical thinking, problem solving, concentration, and memory. Chess can help in all of these areas plus we make it fun! Trophies are awarded to every student at the end of the session. Supervised indoor play and outdoor play are provided after class until 4:00 for $345. Additional After-School care is available until 6:00 for $410.
 
Everything That Floats and Flies
Instructor: Ken Cressman
Location: Lunch Room/Art Room/Playground
Class day and time: Friday, 1:00-2:00 Grades K-6
Class Begins: Friday, March 2
It’s a bird, no it’s a plane, no it’s stupendous flying and floating creations by students. Learn to create and assemble a whole collection of flying and floating contraptions. Glide with mini airplanes, soar with air pressure and straw rockets, manufacture and fly your own planes of wood and paper, learn the secrets of hot air balloons, and whiz through the air with propelled flying craft. Also, students will learn about why stuff floats, how to make a diving squid, and how to sink a bathtub battleship. Taught by our very own flight instructor and captain, Ken Cressman, this class should be a blast! Mr. Cressman will help students learn about flight and floating through fun projects that the students can bring home or recreate. Supervised indoor play and outdoor play are provided after class until 4:00 for $345. Additional After-School care is available until 6:00 for $410.
