How can families and educators provide children with the life skills they need to cope in our multi-tasking, multimedia, modern world?

Ellen Galinsky looked for answers to this question when her research showed that far too many children are turned off to learning. Collaborating with child development specialists and neuroscientists, Ms. Galinsky found that life skills involve the part of the brain that weaves together our social, emotional, and intellectual capacities which help pursue set goals.

Collectively, the vision statement of GEEARS and the commitment of
the Rollins Center and the Annie E. Casey Foundation “to ensure that
all children enter kindergarten ready to succeed and on a path to read to
learn by third grade” are aligned with Ms. Galinsky’s work in childhood
development.

A frequent visitor to CBS Evening News, World News Tonight, and Oprah and a presenter at national conferences, Ms. Galinsky discusses how life skills help children thrive. In her book Mind in the Making, the seven skills Ms. Galinsky discusses are:
Focus and self control Making Connections
Communicating Taking challenges
Critical thinking Self-directed, engaged learning
Perspective taking

Ms. Galinsky believes that we can address the achievement gap in this country and help all children gain these life skills.
