Another Chance to Adopt-A-Book
Thank you to all who supported our annual Adopt-A-Book event. If you were unable to stop by last week or would like to adopt another book, we maintain a nice supply of new books available for adoption. Simply stop by the Library or contact Diane Kellum or Mary Ellen Thorn. Don't forget that we also have a Birthday Book Club which offers a special way to recognize a child's birthday and teach the value of giving. Please see the librarians with any questions.

Wardlaw's Performance of The Loathsome Dragon
Yesterday, our Wardlaw 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students performed their world premier of The Loathsome Dragon, a retelling of an English folktale, which was written and composed by our very talented students. The opera was staged in medieval times and our students explored the themes of good overcoming evil and love conquering envy through this story of a princess who was turned into a dragon by her stepmother, the queen.  The prince learns of his sister's plight and rescues her with three kisses--literally three Hersey's kisses!  Congratulations to all our students on their wonderful performance.  To get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action, please click on the picture.

Caring Kids (and Staff) Make Generous Gifts
Thank you to all students, families, and staff who contributed to our Caring Kids Coin Drive for our collective donation to the American Red Cross to benefit the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. After reaching a total of $951.86 in donations, one of our staff members made a final donation to bring the total to an even $1,000. The funds will be used to provide direct emergency relief, medical services, and emotional counseling to the devastated communities.

We're Getting Closer all the Time
Do you know why six is afraid of seven? Because seven eight nine! How about this one: Why is an island like the letter T? Make your gift to the Annual Fund today and help us reveal the answer!

We are approaching the end of our 2010-2011 Annual Fund campaign on May 31st and 48% of our parents have committed their support to this year's campaign. We need your help to reach our goal of 100% staff participation. Please make your gift online today or pick up a pledge form at the front desk. Every gift makes a difference - no matter the size!

Speech School Meets Oberkotter Challenge
We have great news to share about the Katherine Hamm Center! The Speech School has claimed this year's $100,000 Oberkotter Challenge grant which helps support the work of the Hamm Center! Thanks to our generous donors, this makes the third year in a row that we've met the Oberkotter Foundation's challenge grant. In 2009, The Oberkotter Foundation, based in Philadelphia, made a significant financial commitment to support the Katherine Hamm Center with a multi-year grant, challenging us to raise funds from parents, friends, and other foundations specifically for the Hamm Center. In addition to this year's $100,000 challenge, we have met the previous two years' challenges of $75,000 in 2009 and $90,000 in 2010. Many thanks to all who helped make this possible!

Just So You Know...
Saturday, April 30 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and the Sandy Spring Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency are sponsoring a joint drop-off location at the police department at 5995 Barfield Road from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This public safety and public health initiative responds to the fact that more than seven million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Tragically, more than 2,500 teens each day use prescription drugs for the first time, often obtaining them from families and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. Safe disposal of unwanted or unused prescription drugs can be a challenge. Children or pets could find them in the garbage. Additionally, sewage treatment plants and septic system processes could allow these substances to be released in the waterways and lead to contamination of surface water, ground water, and soil. For more information, please visit http://www.sandyspringsga.org.
