STEAM-Powered
The Atlanta Speech School Martha West Looney Learning Commons (MWLLC) is an extension of the classroom, guiding and celebrating STEAM learning as a natural extension of reading. With space for making and exploring, as well as rows upon rows of books, the Learning Commons aims to extend the curriculum, spark curiosity, and ignite imagination. The construction of the Deep Reading Brain is accelerated as students innovate and explore a rich range of hands-on resources.
Students engage in dynamic STEAM classes that bridge literature and real-world application—including architecture, where they design and build structural models; broadcast news, where they write, record, and produce multimedia segments; roller coaster engineering, which blends physics and creativity in thrilling track designs; robotics, where they learn coding and problem-solving through interactive challenges; and musical instrument construction, where students explore the science of sound and creativity through the design and building of their own instruments.
Using literary, research, and technological skills, students explore, tinker, problem-solve, and create to learn ways of working in a global and digital society. Our Media Specialist, Peggy Helmly, is available to assist students, teachers, parents, and community members with research guidance and book selection. Ms. Peggy also leads interactive reading groups, STEAM lessons, and media literacy sessions for every student in age-appropriate contexts.
